DJI OSMO Action 4 Review - Editors Keys

DJI OSMO Action 4 Review

We were fortunate to have been sent the new DJI Osmo Action 4 action camera a little while ago and we've spent some time with it, putting it through its paces and testing out the new features and additions. In this blog post, we'll take you through the remarkable improvements and the amazing functionalities that make this camera stand out from its predecessor, the Osmo Action 3.

What's New in DJI Osmo Action 4?

  1. Larger Image Sensor: The Osmo Action 4 boasts a 1/1.3" image sensor, delivering significantly improved image quality and superior low-light performance compared to previous models.

  2. Extended Battery Life and GPS: With longer battery life and built-in GPS, so already a big improvement upon its predecessors

  3. 4K/120fps Mode & 155º Ultra-Wide FOV: Enjoy stunning images and a broader perspective with the 4K/120fps mode and the 155º ultra-wide field of view.

  4. 10-bit with D-Log M: The inclusion of 10-bit D-Log M footage simplifies editing and offers a wider dynamic range, making colour grading a walk in the park!

  5. 360° HorizonSteady Stabilisation: The Osmo Action 4 features HorizonSteady stabilisation and built-in GPS, ensuring smooth and steady footage, even during action-packed moments.

10-bit Footage

When using the Pro mode on the Osmo Action 4, you can access the 10-bit D-Log M footage. Compared to the Osmo Action 3, the D-Log M format is easier to colour grade and offers greater dynamic range, allowing for more detail during editing. Even if you're not a professional editor, the D-Log M feature simplifies the process, making it ideal for users of all skill levels. RockSteady Stabilisation

The RockSteady stabilisation on the Osmo Action 4 is a marvel, providing incredibly smooth footage. For a seamless experience, the horizon balancing feature minimises tilting motions- we tend to have this feature on most of the time, even when vlogging as the tilting motions can be a bit disorienting to watch back. The HorizonBalancing feature makes the Osmo Action 4 perfect for vlogging and action-packed activities like skateboarding and skiing, a true all-rounder!

Underwater

The Osmo Action 4 boasts significant improvements in underwater capabilities, including water colour temperature detection. Here in the UK we have quite dark, murky seawater (not quite the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean!) so we tested this out in the chilly British sea at Holkham beach in North Norfolk. When filming underwater the camera automatically adjusts the colour temperature, the result is that the sand and water ended up looking more natural and didn't have that off-green or blueish tinge to it, which we were pretty impressed by! If you like underwater activities like snorkelling, scuba diving or just having a swim then this feature will certainly help you get much better and more natural looking footage, and won't have to worry about the hassle of colour grading afterwards.

Larger Image Sensor

The Osmo Action 4's standout feature is its larger image sensor, the largest among action cameras today. With its F/2.8 aperture, the camera captures more light, resulting in improved image quality and exceptional low-light performance. We conducted a comparison test in low-light conditions inside Manchester cathedral against a GoPro Action 11, and the footage from the Osmo Action 4 came out much more crisp and true to life, much closer to that seen with the naked eye. When reviewing the GoPro footage it was very orangey looking as well as slightly blurred and just didn't look as good as the Osmo footage. Of course the cathedral wasn't pitch black or a nighttime setting, but the clue's in the name: low-light

ND Filters

Equipped with three ND filters, the Osmo Action 4 allows you to achieve smoother and more cinematic footage when adhering to the 1/50 shutter rule. We tested it out in Manchester and did notice that the filter caused a few issues for the image stabilisation if you're moving about a lot with the camera, the image become a little bit jittery. This issue isn't as apparent if you're using a tripod for a static shot, the image become a lot smoother and closer to that cinematic effect.

Slow Motion

The OSMO Action 4 is able to film in 4K up to 100fps, which we think is quite impressive for a camera of this size! If you're creating Insta or TikTok reels or want to capture some cool action shots and slow them down then it's possible with the Action 4 and it's a really nice edition to the camera.

GPS Integration

The inclusion of GPS in the Osmo Action 4 is a welcome addition, we were a little disappointed to have not seen it in the previous model. It's a brilliant feature for outdoor activities like cycling or capturing car footage, showcasing your route and speed for a more engaging viewing experience.

Conclusion

To conclude, we're super impressed with the DJI Osmo Action 4. It's a fantastic action camera, offering outstanding image quality and user-friendly features. Its built-in microphones excel at wind reduction, delivering high-quality sound to complement your equally as high quality footage. Moreover, the 10-bit D-Log M and exceptional low-light performance make it a must-have for nighttime shooting. While the improvements in daytime image quality aren't very much, and may not warrant upgrading from the Action 3, the Osmo Action 4 is undeniably a top contender in the action camera market.

I use the camera as a underwater videographer, mainly rolling in to water and near surface shots, the auto white balance in standard colour is very good and as one rolls into the water, the AWB changes almost instantly, very good a a great time saver. Skins tones top side are normally good. The 10 bit log is very good for deeper underwater shots. I find it better than my GoPro10. The significant down side is the lack of adapter to match action 4 with 3rd party UW lenses. If I was using it as my UW main camera, Id opt for Gopro, just because of the add on lens options. Then using video lights is easier with lenses and the bigger sensor action 4 has is less important.

I recently tried a DIY drone, using HEQ’s drone: SWAN K1 PRO PNP, this drone has VTOL function, also provides flight control and GPS, and it only sells for $499. I put my own gopro camera in and used the HEQ battery. The flight time was about 50 minutes, and the shooting pictures were very stable.
